Once Upon a Time II

Finally the Once Upon a Time Challenge is running again this year hosted again by Carl V at Stainless Steel Droppings with a review site here. The challenge runs from 21/3/08 - 20/6/08 and there are three different challenges you can undertake. I have chosen Quest the Second (Read at least one book from each of the four categories. In this quest you will be reading 4 books total: one fantasy, one folklore, one fairy tale, and one mythology. ) and my list is below. I have more than four books as a couple are graphic novels I have been looking forward to reading for a while now.

Fantasy :
1. The Wood Wife - Terri Windling
2. Black Orchid - Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean
Folklore :
3.Thomas the Rhymer - Ellen Kushner
4.The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr Punch - Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean
Fairy Tale :
5. Snow White and Rose Red - Patricia C Wrede
Mythology :
6. Weight - Jeanette Winterson
7. Lion's Honey - David Grossman

I am really looking forward to this challenge and will hopefully finish reading all the books on my list (fingers crossed)...

First one in! So glad you're joining in this year. And what a great list. You've already inspired me because I haven't read any Terri Windling fiction and I really adore her so I think I'll look for The Wood Wife as well.

Yay for being the first! I really enjoyed the challenge last year so I was really excited to hear you were hosting it again. I love Terri's anthologies with Ellen Datlow and I am looking forward to reading some of her own writing.

Great list! Some of those are books I really enjoyed, and others are books I also want to read. I look forward to reading your thoughts on them.

What a cool list! Love the Gaiman GNs that you have on your list. I'm reading Black Orchid this year too..hopefully during the challenge and I love Mr. Punch. Great McKean collaboration. Glad to see you're reading The Wood Wife too...I've been wanting to read that one for awhile!

I've got The Wood Wife on my list, too, and am really looking forward to reading it. I see you have a couple of the books from the Canongate series on mythology. I'd love to read all of them, so I'm looking forward to your reviews.

I haven't read anything on your list either, which is great because I'm hoping to pick some recs. I've heard that Thomas the Rhymer is very good, I have two other Kushner books on my tbr pile, so will be interested to hear about that one. Excellent list!

Did you notice that you have Chris as hosting this challenge, not Carl? :p

You have good books on that list. I want Snow White and Red Rose but seems to me it is out of print. I'm jealous! Good luck!

Dark Orpheus - I am looking forward to Gril Meets Boy comingout in paperback. I am reading The Accidental for my next book group in a few weeks.

Nymeth - I am looking forward to comparing notes :)

Deslily - I am looking forward to keeping an eye on the challenge review page as people look to be reading a great set of books this year.

Nicola - I hope you get some recommendations :)

Chris - I picked them up randomly at the library on my last visit so it's a good excuse to get around to reading them. I am really looking forward to reading some of Terri's own writing.

Melody - I hope you get some ideas from my reviews hopefully...

Robin - I want to eventually read the whole Cannongate series, I just have a thing against hardbacks so am waiting patiently for them to come out in the UK. If I have time (unlikely) I will read The Helmet of Horror as well.

Cath - It will be my first book by Kushner and will keep an eye out for your review to see what her other works are like.

Kailana - Clearly I need more sleep, will adjust it now doh. Try Amazon marketplace for out of print books in decent condition, that was where I got my copy from.
