Moist Von Lipwing is a con artist with many different aliases. One, Albert Spangler, is being hanged and Moist has a visit from an angel AKA the Patrician offering him a choice. He can either take his chances with the door behind him (leading to certain death he assumes) or take the job offered getting the Post Office back up and running. Sensibly Moist opts for the latter.
After being retrieved by his parole officer (golem Mr Pump) once, he decides the only thing to do is knuckly down and give the job a go. He meets the rest of the postal staff. The ancient Junior Postman Groat, Stanley (obsessed with pins who has "little moments" of insanity) and cat Mr Tiddles. Between them they take on the corrupted clacks system run by Reacher Gilt and bring in the idea of stamps. They also try to start delivering all the old mail which has filled the post office making it unsafe to work in. The old mail which whispers in the night and whose only mission is to be delivered. If this all wasn't bad enough, Moist is trying to get a date with Adora Bell Dearheart, a chain smoker who works for golem's rights.
This was a fine return to form. The new characters worked really well, especially Moist and the golems. It was nice to see some familiar faces pop up in small side roles like Ridcully, Death, Ponder Stibbons and Carrot. I still think a book solely about the Patrician Vetinari would be a wonderful addition to the collection. He has become my favourite character as the books have progressed.
